ROHDE & SCHWARZ SMP04 (1035.5005.04)   Description / Specification:   Spec Sheet
ROHDE & SCHWARZ SMP04 40 GHz Microwave Signal Generator

The R&S SMP04 (1035.5005.04) 40 GHz Microwave Signal Generator has been designed for high output power with AM, FM and optional phase modulation. High spectral purity is ensured by the use of YIG oscillators – up to 20 GHz without any frequency multiplying. The crystal reference built-in as standard ensures an accurate and low-drift output frequency. The SMP04 has extremely low SSB phase noise of <–105 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz (10 kHz from carrier) as well as nonharmonics of <–60/54 dBc up to/above 20 GHz. Functions qualifying the SMP04 for EMC applications include the trigger facility for step-by-step sweeping, marker outputs and, above all, the extension of the frequency range to 10 MHz (option SMP-B11). Specifications. Frequency Range: 2 GHz to 40 GHz. Resolution: 0.1 Hz. Setting time (to within <1x10^–6) after IEC-/IEEE-bus delimiter: <(11 ms + 5 ms/GHz). Phase offset: adjustable in 1° steps. Harmonics f <1.8 GHz: <–30 dBc (<+0 dBm). Nonharmonics at >10 kHz from carrier f <2 GHz: <–60 dBc typ. Maximum level: >+12 dBm (10MHz to <2GHz), >+10 dBm (2 GHz to <18 GHz), >+6 dBm (18 GHz to 20 GHz), >+11 dBm (20 GHz to 33 GHz), >+10 dBm (33 GHz to 40 GHz). Resolution: 0.1 dB or 0.01 dB. Output impedance: 50 ohm. Remote control: IEC625 (IEEE488). Options. SMP-B11 (1036.6240.02), Frequency Extension 0.01 GHz to 2 GHz. SMP-B12 (1036.5750.04), Pulse Modulator 2 GHz to 40 GHz. SMP-B13 (1036.7147.02), 0.01 GHz to 2 GHz. SMP-B14 (1036.7347.02), Pulse Generator. SMP-B17 (036.5550.02), RF Attenuator 40 GHz. SMP-B18 (1036.8920.02), Auxiliary Interface. Channel Bandwidth
Channel Bandwidth is the bandwidth over which power is measured. This is usually the bandwidth in which almost all of the power of a signal is contained.

Jitter
Jitter in technical terms is the deviation in or displacement of some aspect of the pulses in a high-frequency digital signal. Jitter is the time variation of a periodic signal in electronics and telecommunications, often in relation to a reference clock source. Jitter may be observed in characteristics such as the frequency of successive pulses, the signal amplitude, or phase of periodic signals. Jitter is a significant, and usually undesired, factor in the design of almost all communications links (e.g., USB, PCI-e, SATA, OC-48). In clock recovery applications it is called timing jitter.

Overshoot
Overshoot is the distortion that follows a major transition; the difference between the peak power point and the pulse-top amplitude computed as a percentage of the pulse-top amplitude.

Rise Time
Rise time refers to the time required for a signal to change from a specified low value to a specified high value, usually 10 and 90 percent of pulse-top amplitude (vertical display is linear power).
