EXFO FTB-5500B Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) Analyzer Module

The EXFO FTB-5500B PMD Analyzer module is designed for ultra-long-haul and 40 Gbit/s applications. It provides you with the speed, accuracy and high performance you need to ensure high-quality network services. Particularly important in multichannel transmission and as rates reach 40 Gbit/s and higher, second-order PMD is derived from the measured PMD value. EXFO’s software provides second-order PMD delay and coefficient values for telecom fibers. These values allow you to characterize fibers and cables more precisely than simple PMD and better control the transmission quality of high-speed systems. The Exfo FTB-5500B has unique technology that allows for both the auto-correlation and cross-correlation to be known. Therefore, any spectral shape of source can be used. The auto-correlation peak is thus removed, and higher accuracy and resolution are obtained. PMD of 0 ps can be measured. In addition, a signal transmitted through EDFAs can be analyzed for total link PMD. Specifications. Wavelength range: 1260 to 1675 nm (O to U band). Measurement range: 0 to 115 ps. Sensitivity (Typical, for C band. May be increased with averaging. With the FLS-5800, the typical dynamic range is 47 dB.): –45 dBm. Measuring time: 4.5 s (for any PMD value). Absolute uncertainty (strong mode coupling), (ps) ± (0.020 + 2 % of PMD). Allows measurement through EDFA Yes (above 120 EDFAs).

Pricing does include NIST traceable calibration and issue of a calibration certificate and calibration label. Pricing may vary slightly due to volume and location of laboratory supporting calibration. Volume pricing may apply. On-site fees may apply depending on logistics, location and volume of work to be completed during the visit.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission Source (ASE)
ASE, a process where spontaneously emitted radiation (luminescence) is amplified. In lasers and particularly in high-gain erbium-doped amplifiers, amplified spontaneous emission is usually an unwanted effect. It tends to limit the gain achievable in a single stage of a fiber optic amplifier to the order of 40–50 dB.

Dynamic Range
In a transmission system, the ratio of the overload level to the noise level of the system, usually expressed in dB. Ratio of the highest to lowest detectable signal of a system, expressed in dB.

Optical Power
Optical Power is usually measured in "dBm", or decibels referenced to one miliwatt of power. while loss is a relative reading, optical power is an absolute measurement, referenced to standards. You measure absolute power to test transmitters or receivers and relative power to test loss.

Relative Wavelength Accuracy
When randomly changing the wavelength and measuring the differences between the actual and displayed wavelengths, the relative wavelength accuracy is ± half the span between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Wavelength
Wavelength is a term for the color of light, usually expressed in nanometers (nm) or microns (m). In Fiber Optics the wavelenghts mostly used are in the infrared region where the light is invisible to the human eye.
