   EXFO ELS-500   Description / Specification:
EXFO ELS-500 LED / Laser Light Source

The Exfo ELS-500 Series light source are handhelds built for top ruggedness, perfect for the harshest test conditions. They feature a keypad/LCD backlight, for easy operation in darker environments, rechargeable batteries and interchangeable connectors. Exfo ELS-500 testers help you achieve first-class testing and certification of private/enterprise/premises networks. These products are part of EXFO's series of FTTx optical test products. They allow for the testing of passive optical networks (PONs) at the three main wavelengths (1310, 1490 and 1550 nm) used in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks and complies with the ITU-T G.983 and G.984 Recommendation series and the IEEE 802.3ah standard. The EXFO’s ELS-500 light source provides excellent stability and high measurement accuracy for two singlemode wavelengths (1310 or 1550 nm) on a single port, or four wavelengths (850/1300 nm and 1310/1550 nm) on two ports. It is the perfect complement to the EPM-500 Power Meter when it comes to measuring attenuation on fiber-optic links. When used with the EPM-500 Power Meter, tone generation is just a button away. The ELS-500 has the highest singlemode output power in the industry. Central wavelength (nm): 850 ± 25 / 1300 +50/-10 (ELS-500-12D), 1310 ± 20 / 1550 ± 20 (ELS-500-23BL), Spectral width (nm): 50/135 (ELS-500-12D), Output power (dBm):>= -20/>=-20 (62.5/125 µm) (ELS-500-12D), = 1/= 1 (ELS-500-23BL). Automatic wavelength switching: Yes, Tone generation: 270 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, Battery life (hours) (typical in Auto mode): 50.

*This is a Web introductory price for one calibration of the EXFO ELS-500. Price does not in most cases include measurement performance data. Pricing does include NIST traceable calibration and issue of a calibration certificate and calibration label. Pricing may vary slightly due to volume and location of laboratory supporting calibration. Volume pricing may apply. On-site fees may apply depending on logistics, location and volume of work to be completed during the visit.

Related Optical Terms and Definitions. For a complete list go to our  Terms and Definitions Page.

Chirp
A change in the optical frequency caused by direct modulation of the laser. A chirp is a signal in which the frequency increases ('up-chirp') or decreases ('down-chirp') with time. In some sources, the term chirp is used interchangeably with sweep signal.

Isolation
The extent to which optical power from one signal path is prevented from reaching another signal path.

Polarization Extinction Ratio
Polarization Extinction Ratio is the ratio of optical power in the slow axis of the polarization maintaining fiber to optical power in the fast axis within a specified wavelength range.

Sidemode Suppression Ratio
Sidemode Suppression Ratio is the ratio of average signal power to the optical power of the highest sidemode within a distance from 0.1 to 6 GHz to the signal’s optical frequency, expressed in dB.

Wavelength Stability
Wavelength Stability is the change of wavelength during given time span, expressed as ± half the span between the maximum and the minimum of all actual wavelengths.
