Keysight (Agilent) 8487A 50 GHz Average Power Sensor

The Agilent 8487A silicon monolithic thermocouple Average Power Sensor is for use with HP 435B, 436A, 437B, 438A, 70100A, EPM series, EPM-P series, E1416A and P-series power meters. This power sensor measures average power for all signal types regardless of signal bandwidth and provide extraordinary accuracy, stability, and SWR over a wide range of frequencies. Specifcations. Frequency Range: 50 MHz to 50 GHz. Power range: 0.3 microW to 100 mW, -30 to +20 dBm. Maximum SWR: 50 MHz to 100 MHz: 1.15, 100 MHz to 2 GHz: 1.10, 2 GHz to 12.4 GHz: 1.15, 12.4 GHz to 18 GHz: 1.20, 18 GHz to 26.5 GHz: 1.25, 26.5 GHz to 40 GHz: 1.30, 40 GHz to 50 GHz: 1.50. Average Power
Average power means that the energy transfer rate is to be averaged over many periods of the lowest frequency involved. For a CW signal, the lowest frequency and highest frequency are the same, so average power and power are the same. For an amplitude modulated wave, the power must be averaged over many periods of the modulation component of the signal as well.

Harmonic
A harmonic of a wave is a component frequency of the signal that is an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency, i.e. if the fundamental frequency is f, the harmonics have frequencies 2f, 3f, 4f, . . . etc.

Phase Noise
Phase noise is the frequency domain representation of rapid, short-term, random fluctuations in the phase of a waveform, caused by time domain instabilities. Phase noise (L(f)) is typically expressed in units of dBc/Hz, representing the noise power relative to the carrier contained in a 1 Hz bandwidth centered at a certain offsets from the carrier.
