Keysight (Agilent) 33120A Function/Arbitrary Waveform Generator

The Agilent 33120A is a function and arbitrary waveform generator. It is capable of producing Sine, square, triangle, ramp, noise, sin(x)/x, exponential rise, exponential fall, heartbeat and dc volts. Its arbitrary waveform generator is capable of handling waveform lengths from 8 to 16,000 points, with an amplitude resolution of 12 bits (including sign), with a sample rate of 40 MSa/s. Sine and square waves can be produced at frequencies from 100 micro-hertz to 15 MHz. Triangle and ramp wave forms can be produced at frequencies from 100 micro-hertz to 100 kHz, while noise can be generated in a 10 MHz bandwidth. Frequency resolution is as high as 10 micro-hertz or 10 digits. Wave form frequency is accurate to 10 ppm for 90 days, and to 20 ppm for 1 year. Sine waveforms have harmonic distortion at -70 dBc at frequencies from DC to 20 kHz, at -60 dBc from 20 kHz to 100 kHz, at -45 dBc from 100 kHz to 1 MHz, and at -35 dBc from 1 MHz to 15 MHz. Spurious distortion occurs at frequencies from DC to 1 MHz at levels below -65 dBc. For all other frequencies, it occurs below -65 dBc plus 6 dB per octave. Phase noise occurs below -55 dBc in a 30 kHz band. Generated square waves have rise/fall times under 20 ns and less than 4% overshoot. Square wave asymmetry is <1% plus 5 ns. Available duty cycles include 20% to 80% for frequencies up to 5 MHz, and 40% to 60% up to 15 MHz. For triangle, ramp, and arbitrary wave forms, typical rise/fall times are 40 ns. The settling time is <250 ns to be within 0.5% of the final value, with a jitter under 25 ns. The output level can range from 50 mV p-p to 10 V p-p. Level settings are accurate within 1% at frequencies of 1 kHz. The average flatness across all output frequencies is within 2% of level setting. Offset is adjustable across +/-5Vpk + dc, accurate within +/-2% of the setting + 2 mV. # digits of resolution are available for both amplitude and offset, with readings displayed in V pp, V rms, and dBm. AM is provided across all waveforms including arbitrary, with frequencies up to 20 kHz both internaly and externaly. FM is provided for all waveforms as well to frequencies of 10 kHz. FM peak deviation is 10 mHz to 15 MHz. Only internal FM is provided. FSK is available with internal rates from 10 mHz to 50 kHz, and a frequency range from 10 mHz to 15 MHz. Both internal and external sources are available, with external sources up to 1 MHz. Burst modulation has a maximum carrier frequency of 5 MHz, with cycle counts from 1 to 50,000 cycles or infinite. The phase can be set from -360 to 360 degrees. The internal rate for burst mod is 10 mHz to 50 kHz +/-1%. Burst mod can be gated both internally and externally. The 33120A can make linear or logorithmic sweeps up or down, with start and stop frequencies that can fall within 10 mHz to 15 MHz. Sweep speeds can be 1 ms to 500 s +/- 0.1%. Sweep triggers can be internal, external or single. Additional features include a state storage memory which stores the off state on power-down. The exteranl clock reference is stable within +/-1 ppm from 0 to 50 degrees C, with an aging rate under 2ppm after 30 days of continuous operation and 0.1 ppm/month after the first 30 days.

Averaging
Averaging is a mathematical process to reduce the variation in a measurement by summing the data points from multiple measurements and dividing by the number of points summed.

Fall Time
Fall time is the time required for the amplitude of a pulse to decrease (fall) from a specified value (usually 90 percent of the peak value exclusive of overshoot or undershoot) to another specified value (usually 10 percent of the maximum value exclusive of overshoot or undershoot).

Noise Density
Noise Density is the amount of noise within a defined bandwidth, usually normalized to 1 Hz.

Resolution Bandwidth (RBW)
Resolution Bandwidth (RBW) is the minimum bandwidth over which you can separate two signals and still see them.
