Keysight (Agilent) 8146A Optical Time Domain Reflectometer Mainframe

The HP 8146A is a high-performance optical time domain reflectometer mainframe for installation, field maintenance, and bench applications. Plug-in modules are available for all common wavelengths and single and multimode fibers. Each module can be used as a high-resolution or long-range module (switch-selectable). In less than 7 seconds the HP 8146A will automatically characterize the link with up to 100 reflective and non-reflective events. For documentation purposes, the HP 8146A features an optional built-in printer, 3 1/2-inch floppy disk drive or a memory card reader. Horizontal Parameters; Start km: 0 km to 100 km. Span: 1 km to 200 km. Readout Resolution: 0.1 m, 0.0001 mi, 0.1 ft. Minimum Sample Spacing: 0.5 m. Distance Accuracy: ± 1.5 m for 850 nm. Refractive Index: 1.4000 to 1.6000. Length Unit: km, kft, or miles selectable. Measurement Points: 2000 to 4000, depending on selected measurement span and refractive index. Vertical Parameters; Vertical Scale: 0.20 to 5 dB/div. Readout Resolution : 0.001 dB. Linearity: 0.05 dB/dB typical. Reflectance Range: 20 dB to 60 dB. Reflectance Accuracy: ± 2 dB for reflectances between 20 dB and 40 dB (return loss mode, short-range, 100 ns pulse width). CW Mode (single-mode module); Output Power: > -5 dBm. Stability (15 min, T = constant): ± 0.01 dB after 10 min warmup. Pulse Width: selectable, 5/30/100/300 ns, 1/2/3/10 us, depending on module and distance range mode. Module Wavelengths: 850 ± 10 nm, 1300 ± 10 nm, 1310 ± 20 nm, 1550 ± 20 nm. Options. Opt 001, dc Input. Opt 002, Thermal Printer. Opt 003, 3 1/2-in Floppy Disk Drive. Opt 004, Memory Card Reader.

Absolute Wavelength Accuracy
Absolute Wavelength Accuracy is the maximum difference between the actual wavelength and the displayed wavelength of the Optical Source. Wavelength is defined as wavelength in vacuum.

Decibel (dB)
A unit of measurement of optical power which indicates relative power. A -10 dB means a reduction in power by 10 times, -20 dB means another 10 times or 100 times overall, -30 means another 10 times or 1000 times overall and so on.

Nanometer (nm)
A unit of measure used to measure wavelength of light, meaning one one-billionth of a meter

Relative Intensity Noise (RIN)
Relative intensity noise (RIN), describes the instability in the power level of a laser. The noise term is important to describe lasers used in fiber-optic communication and LIDAR remote sensing. It is the square of the (spectrally resolved) RMS optical power amplitude divided by the measurement bandwidth and the square of the average optical power, expressed in dB/Hz.

Total Return loss
In an optical fiber, the loss that takes place at any discontinuity of refractive index, especially at an air-glass interface such as a fiber endface, at which a fraction of the optical signal is reflected back toward the source. RL = - 10log10 (Preflected/Preference)
