Keysight (Agilent) 81561A 60 dB Variable Optical Attenuator Module

The Agilent 81561A Variable Optical Attenuator plug-in module is an instrument that attenuates and controls the optical power level of light in single mode optical fibers. As plug-in modules for Agilent’s Lightwave Multichannel platform (8163A/B, 8164A/B, 8166A/B) they allow you to set the attenuation factor and/or power level manually, or remotely via a common computer interface. Their high accuracy combined with their flexibility make them ideal as test and measurement equipment for the modern telecommunication industry. The Agilent 81561A is a small, cost effective attenuator modules with high resolution for single wavelength applications. By entering the operating wavelength, the instrument automatically applies the appropriate corrections. Various calibration features allow the user to set a reference power. Both the attenuation and the power level, relative to the reference power, can then be set and displayed in the user interface. An integrated shutter, which can be used for protection purposes, or to simulate channel drops, is available. Specifications. Wavelength range: 1200-1700 nm. Fiber type: 9/125 µm SMF28. Attenuation range: 0-60 dB. Resolution: 0.001 dB. Repeatability: +/- 0.01 dB. Accuracy (uncertainty): +/-0.1 dB. Settling time: typ. 100 ms. Polarization dependent loss: <0.05 dBpp. Return loss: typ. 60 dB. Maximum input power: +22 dBm. Shutter isolation: typ. 100 dB. Connectivity: straight connector

Bit Error Ratio (BER)
Bit Error Ratio (BER) is the ratio of errors caused by the number of bits in a data stream that have been altered due to noise, interference, distoriton or bit synchronization errors.

Flatness
Variation of insertion loss on the passband of an optical device.

Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL)
Polarization Dependent Loss is the difference between the maximum and minimum values of loss due to the variation of the polarization states of light propagating through a device. PDL is expressed in decibels. Calculated by; PDL = 10 log10 (Ep/Es), where EP and ES are the measured diffraction efficiencies for P- and S-plane polarized incident light, respectively.

Return Loss (RL)
Return Loss (RL) is the ratio of the incident power to the reflected power expressed in dB. RL = 10log (Pin/Pback)

Wavelength Resolution
Wavelength Resolution is the smallest possible displayed wavelength increment/decrement.
