Keysight (Agilent) 8158B   Description / Specification:
Keysight (Agilent) 8158B Variable Optical Attenuator

The HP 8158B Optical Attenuator is a fully programmable and highly flexible test instrument. Due to its state-of-the-art fiberless design, all applications employing fibers with a numerical aperture up to 0.3 are covered with one instrument. Multimode and single-mode measurements can thus be easily performed. Specifications. Wavelength Range: 600-1200 nm (opt. 001), 1200-1650 nm (opt. 002) Applicable Fiber Type: all fiber types with an NA:<= 0.3. Attenuation Range (excluding insertion loss: 60.00 dB. Linearity: < ±0.4 dB for single-mode, < ±0.2 dB for multimode. Return loss (incl. connectors): 14dB. Display range: 0.00 to 64.00 dB. Display resolution: 0.01 dB (min. step size). Repeatability (of attenuation after a max. of 6 matings with same connector): single-mode (9/um): <0.2dB. Options. Opt. 001: 600-1200 nm. Opt. 002: 1200-1650 nm. Opt. 011: Diamond HMS-10/ HP connector. Opt. 012: FC/ PC connector. Opt. 013: DIN 47256 connector. Opt. 014: ST connector.

On-site fees may apply depending on logistics, location and volume of work to be completed during the visit.

Related Optical Terms and Definitions. For a complete list go to our  Terms and Definitions Page.

Chirp
A change in the optical frequency caused by direct modulation of the laser. A chirp is a signal in which the frequency increases ('up-chirp') or decreases ('down-chirp') with time. In some sources, the term chirp is used interchangeably with sweep signal.

Isolation
The extent to which optical power from one signal path is prevented from reaching another signal path.

Polarization Extinction Ratio
Polarization Extinction Ratio is the ratio of optical power in the slow axis of the polarization maintaining fiber to optical power in the fast axis within a specified wavelength range.

Sidemode Suppression Ratio
Sidemode Suppression Ratio is the ratio of average signal power to the optical power of the highest sidemode within a distance from 0.1 to 6 GHz to the signal’s optical frequency, expressed in dB.

Wavelength Stability
Wavelength Stability is the change of wavelength during given time span, expressed as ± half the span between the maximum and the minimum of all actual wavelengths.
