Keysight (Agilent) 8163A Lightwave Multimeter Mainframe

The Agilent 8163A Lightwave Multimeter Mainframe is a basic measurement tool in the fiberoptic industry. It ensures accurate and fast results even for the most demanding measurements on optical components and systems. Its modular format makes it flexible enough to meet changing measurement needs whether measuring optical power, insertion loss or return loss for single- or multimode components. Four different power sensor modules and three external power sensors (optical heads) cover the important wavelengths and power ranges. Thanks to the excellent accuracy, high linearity and low polarization dependent loss (PDL) best measurement results are ensured. The measurement speed can come down to 200 µs, which further optimizes the power measurements. The source modules are stabilized for short and long term applications and are also not sensitive to backreflections. There is a choice of single and dual wavelength source modules, available with an output power of up to 13 dBm. The output power can be attenuated by up to 6 dB. All source modules are able to output CW or pulse-modulated light (internal modulation 270Hz to 10kHz). The compact tunable laser module offers continuous, mode-hop free tuning, and is set quickly and easily to the target wavelengths and power levels, even for the most complex configurations, just by using the vernier keys. The compact tunable laser modules are available with both standard single-mode fiber and Panda-type PMF. The return loss modules offer high precision and high accuracy for the best possible measurements. Display resolution: 0.0001 dB/dBm, 0.01 pW to 10pW (depending on power range) , up to 6 1/2 digits (user definable). Data acquisition memory: 4000 measurement results 1 channel (remote 12000). Trigger: True synchronous on all channels. Number of modules: Two. Display: Graphical display 190 x 300 points visible, monochrome.

Coherence Length
Average distance over which superimposed waves lose their phase relationships

Linewidth
Linewidth is the width of a spectral line in terms of wavelength, wave number and frequency.

Power Flatness Versus Wavelength
When changing the wavelength at constant power setting and recording the differences between actual and displayed power levels, the power flatness is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum of the measured power levels.

Spectral Width
Spectral Width is the wavelength interval over which the magnitude of all spectral components is equal to or greater than a specified fraction of the magnitude of the component having the maximum value. In optical communications applications, the usual method of specifying spectral width is the full width at half maximum. This is the same convention used in bandwidth, defined as the frequency range where power drops by less than half (at most -3 dB).

Telecom Bands
Optical fiber communications typically operate in a wavelength region corresponding to one of the following Bands. O Band (original): 1260–1360 nm. E Band (extended): 1360–1460 nm. S Band (short wavelengths): 1460–1530 nm. C Band (conventional): 1530–1565 nm. L Band (long wavelengths): 1565–1625 nm. U Band (ultralong wavelengths): 1625–1675 nm
