Keysight (Agilent) 8169A Lightwave Polarization Controller

The HP 8169A Polarization Controller provides polarization synthesis relative to a built-in linear polarizer. The internal quarter-wave plate and half-wave plate are individually adjusted to create all possible states of polarization. Predeterministic algorithms within the HP 8169A enable the transition path from one state of polarization on the Poincare sphere to another to be specified along orthogonal great circles. These features are important because device response data can be correlated to specific states of polarization input to the test device. Specifications. Operating Wavelength Range: 1470 to 1570 nm. Overall Insertion Loss: < 1.5 dB (Option 020). Insertion Loss Variation (with adjustment/rotation): <= ± 0.03 dB (Option 020). Polarization Extinction Ratio: > 45 dB (1530 to 1560 nm), > 40 dB (1470 to 1570 nm. Polarization Adjustment Resolution: 0.18° (360° /2480 encoder positions). Angular Adjustment Accuracy: Minimum step size, ±0.09°; Greater than minimum step size, ±0.5°. Optical Port Return Loss: > 60 dB (Option 020). Options. Opt 020: Pigtailed Fiber Ports. Opt 021: Straight Contact Connector Output. Opt 022: Angled Contact Connector Output.

Absolute Wavelength Accuracy
Absolute Wavelength Accuracy is the maximum difference between the actual wavelength and the displayed wavelength of the Optical Source. Wavelength is defined as wavelength in vacuum.

Decibel (dB)
A unit of measurement of optical power which indicates relative power. A -10 dB means a reduction in power by 10 times, -20 dB means another 10 times or 100 times overall, -30 means another 10 times or 1000 times overall and so on.

Nanometer (nm)
A unit of measure used to measure wavelength of light, meaning one one-billionth of a meter

Relative Intensity Noise (RIN)
Relative intensity noise (RIN), describes the instability in the power level of a laser. The noise term is important to describe lasers used in fiber-optic communication and LIDAR remote sensing. It is the square of the (spectrally resolved) RMS optical power amplitude divided by the measurement bandwidth and the square of the average optical power, expressed in dB/Hz.

Total Return loss
In an optical fiber, the loss that takes place at any discontinuity of refractive index, especially at an air-glass interface such as a fiber endface, at which a fraction of the optical signal is reflected back toward the source. RL = - 10log10 (Preflected/Preference)
